Counting your chickens before they hatch is a bad idea, but doing it with Cardinal Richelieu is a historical death sentence. During the Day of the Dupes in 1630, Marie de' Medici finally convinced the French King to fire his ruthless chief minister, Richelieu. The court enemies immediately started popping early-modern champagne, celebrating the end of his tyrannical reign. However, Richelieu simply sneaked into the King’s hunting lodge, turned on the manipulative charm, and flipped the monarch back. By nightfall, the people who had celebrated his downfall that very morning were being exiled, arrested, or prepped for the executioner.
