A closer look
Going out with a punchline is the ultimate power move. In 258 AD, the Roman Prefect ordered the execution of Lawrence, a deacon of the early church. They strapped him to a giant iron grill over hot coals. Instead of screaming, legend says Lawrence took the agonizing pain in stride, looked down at the men roasting him, and cheerfully quipped, 'I am cooked on that side; turn me over, and eat.' He is now, totally unironically, the patron saint of cooks and comedians.
