Why book spines point opposite ways across the Atlantic

Due to a complete lack of global standardization, reading a bookshelf is a geographical nightmare. In America, publishers print spine text to be read top-to-bottom so it is easily legible when the book is lying flat face-up. In Europe, they print it bottom-to-top, meaning international book collections require constant, infuriating head-tilting just to browse.
