A closer look
Slaying dragons is fun, but accidentally triggering your friend's real-life phobia of giant spiders is not. As tabletop roleplaying games moved away from pure tactical combat into deep, emotional storytelling, a new problem emerged: narrative boundaries. Designer John Stavropoulos introduced the 'X-Card,' a literal index card placed on the gaming table. If the Dungeon Master or a player introduces a theme that makes someone genuinely uncomfortable—be it torture, claustrophobia, or worse—anyone can tap the card. The group immediately edits the scene and moves on, no questions asked. It’s a brilliantly simple safety tool that prioritizes human empathy over rigid fantasy simulation.
