Rome's streets are paved with ancient lava

When you walk the historic streets of Rome, you are stepping on stones known as sampietrini. Instead of using modern asphalt, the city has traditionally paved its roads using carefully cut blocks of black basalt, an incredibly durable volcanic rock left behind by ancient lava flows. The stones allow the ground to breathe but are notoriously slippery during rainstorms.
