A closer look

Landing on the moon basically required dressing the spaceship in excessive bling. Without an atmosphere to regulate extreme solar radiation, the fragile lunar lander needed absolute maximum thermal reflection. Engineers wrapped the base of the spacecraft in heavy layers of amber-colored Kapton plastic and highly reflective, genuine gold foil to aggressively bounce the sun's deadly rays away, making the most expensive vehicle ever built look like cheap candy wrapping.
