A closer look
Paying a rogue Venetian fisherman to illegally drop you off on a quarantined plague island in the dead of night is peak dark tourism. Poveglia is strictly off-limits to the public, mostly because its soil is supposedly half human ash from centuries of dumping bubonic plague victims and asylum inmates there. Naturally, this absolute ban only makes cynical ghost hunters want to visit it more, turning crumbling psychiatric hospitals into morbid playgrounds for tourists dodging the police.
