Barium sulfate completely resists chemical dissolution
Some compounds dissolve gracefully, but barium sulfate simply refuses to participate in standard chemistry. It is so obnoxiously insoluble that you can dump it into aggressive solvents and it will just stare back at you completely unchanged. This stubborn refusal to interact makes it incredibly useful for applications where a heavy material must strictly ignore its surroundings.
