Roblox was originally built in 2004 as an educational physics simulator called Interactive Physics, meant to help students understand gravity, pulleys, and basic mechanical engineering. David Baszucki created a sandbox where kids could build whatever they wanted, but he quickly realized the users just wanted to construct absurd virtual worlds and hit each other with blocky vehicles. Realizing that raw, chaotic entertainment was vastly more profitable than teaching middle schoolers about kinetic energy, the platform rebranded and eventually exploded into a multi-billion dollar metaverse. So an earnest attempt to create the next generation of civil engineers accidentally birthed a digital sweatshop where children actively scam each other for virtual currency to buy pixelated hats
