Mica sheets insulate high voltage without melting
HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART
In early high-power electronics, components needed to be tightly screwed to metal chassis to dump heat, but doing so would cause a catastrophic electrical short. The solution was wedging microscopically thin sheets of mica, a naturally occurring flaky mineral, between the parts. We actively avoided lethal electrocution by shoving shiny dirt between the metal plates.
