Why Dalmatians once ran beside horse carriages

Before becoming the entirely arbitrary mascot of modern fire departments, these violently energetic spotted dogs served as a primitive car alarm. Dalmatians were aggressively bred to possess the insane stamina required to run endlessly beside horse-drawn carriages, loudly barking to quickly clear the road and fiercely protecting the horses from roaming wild predators.
