The seemingly pretentious, ridiculously fluffy poodle haircut was originally a matter of pure aquatic survival. Poodles were fiercely active duck-hunting dogs; hunters aggressively shaved their hindquarters entirely to reduce water drag while swimming, purposely leaving obnoxious puffs of fur strictly around the joints to prevent arthritis in freezing lakes.
