While most Renaissance citizens viewed animals solely as food or labor, Da Vinci was a strict vegetarian with a profound empathy for wildlife. He would regularly stroll through urban markets, purchase entire cages of captive birds from completely bewildered merchants, and immediately open the doors to release them into the sky.
