Every subculture needs a patron saint, and feline lovers claimed theirs through sheer misunderstanding. Saint Gertrude originally had nothing to do with cats; she was associated with warding off mice and rats. However, over centuries of iconography, artists began depicting her surrounded by the natural predators of mice. Eventually, the internet-era Catholics fully embraced the visual and crowned her the holy protector of cats.
