The glowing, modern TKTS booth with its iconic red steps wasn't always a glowing monument to discounted theater. When it first opened in the 1970s, it was literally just a rented construction trailer plopped in the middle of a crime-ridden Times Square. It was the only place you could get mugged and buy half-price tickets to Pippin in the exact same afternoon.
