Hydroelectric dams spin metal wheels with falling water

Despite billions of dollars in infrastructure, hydroelectricity is essentially just putting a water wheel in a stream on steroids. The massive concrete structure creates an artificial lake, forcing millions of gallons of water through tiny lower tubes called penstocks. The absurdly high pressure of the trapped water violently spins giant mechanical turbines before it escapes downstream.
