Escalator steps are really a moving floor
The magical transforming stairs in the mall are actually just a rigid metal conveyor belt. Each step is an unbending, wedge-shaped aluminum block with two sets of wheels in the back and front. They ride on completely separate tracks hidden in the walls. When the tracks diverge, the blocks drop to form stairs; when the tracks level out, the blocks perfectly align into a flat, moving floor.
