George Uhlenbeck and Samuel Goudsmit were looking at highly complex atomic spectra and completely failed to make the numbers work. They boldly proposed that electrons constantly rotate on an axis, an idea so inherently strange their senior professors tried to block the publication. Their bizarre theoretical leap ended up flawlessly resolving the chaotic atomic math.
