How a séance trumpet was said to carry a voice
In independent voice mediumship, the medium was not supposed to speak the spirit’s words aloud. Instead, participants believed a spirit could produce speech through invisible vocal cords associated with a lightweight cone-shaped trumpet. The cone acted as a sound outlet: a voice emerging from its narrow end could seem to travel through the room rather than from the medium’s mouth.
That distinction mattered. If the medium spoke, the performance could be understood as ordinary speech or ventriloquism. A voice seemingly coming from a separate object offered a more dramatic claim of communication—and made the trumpet itself part of the séance’s focus.
Why use a floating cone?
A trumpet can direct and project sound, while aluminum is light enough for a cone to be handled or suspended with relatively little effort. In a dim séance, a moving trumpet and a voice heard from its direction could make the supposed speaker seem to occupy space beyond the medium. The object gave an invisible presence a tangible point of contact.
The name “independent voice” describes the claim made by practitioners, not a demonstrated anatomy: the phantom vocal cords were part of the spiritual explanation. The trumpet’s appeal lay in turning an unseen message into something participants could locate by ear—an intimate whisper apparently arriving from across the room.
