Never let the truth get in the way of a perfectly good story about nerdy teenagers ruining a national economy. The legend goes that Space Invaders was so popular in 1978 that Japan ran out of coins. In reality, a coincidental drop in coin production met with an increase in arcade popularity, but there was never a literal shortage. It was just brilliant, organic PR that we are all still regurgitating decades later.
