Why water carries the meaning
The image is easy to understand without words. Water flows onward rather than stopping in place, so the hope is that the traveler, too, will keep moving freely and reach the destination without trouble. The custom is symbolic, not a practical way to affect what happens on the road.
Because the gesture is brief and happens at the threshold of departure, it also gives hosts a way to express care when there is little time for a longer goodbye. A splash on the ground becomes a portable blessing: the traveler leaves, but the wish for an easy journey goes with them.
