A closer look

Being a great conversationalist is less about being interesting and more about being genuinely curious. People walk away from a chat feeling you were 'so fun' largely because they talked about themselves and felt understood. Studies show we underestimate how much others enjoy being asked deeper follow-up questions, so we stick to safe surface comments. We ask one question, then rush to our own story, trying to impress. The result is two people giving mini speeches at each other. A subtle fix: aim for a 60–40 split where you talk less, but when you do, you connect your experience back to what they just said. Use phrases like 'tell me more about that' and 'what happened next'. You will feel boring at first, yet people will remember you as surprisingly magnetic.
