A closer look
Sometimes being too good at math breaks the entire dungeon. In the genre-defining deckbuilder Slay the Spire, the developers hit a massive balance wall with the robot character, the Defect. Because roguelike deckbuilders rely on synergistic scaling to make players feel powerful, the Defect's mechanics of channeling Orbs meant that savvy players were stumbling into infinite energy loops too early in the procedural runs. The team had to hard-cap certain card draw mechanics and energy generations, realizing that while roguelikes demand overpowered builds, an emergent deck that plays the game by itself strips away the tension of permadeath entirely.
