Why pulse oximeters can miss danger in dark skin

The medical devices we trust to beep when we are dying are fundamentally racist by design. Standard optical pulse oximeters frequently overestimate arterial oxygen levels in patients with dark skin, allowing a deadly phenomenon called silent hypoxemia to destroy lung tissue while the monitor stubbornly insists the patient's oxygen saturation is a healthy 98 percent.
