The endowed progress effect exploits the mathematical gullibility of the human reward system. Handing a customer a ten-slot coffee punch card with two slots already randomly stamped results in significantly faster completion times than handing them a completely blank eight-slot card. The system is violently motivated by the sheer illusion of already being twenty percent finished.
