A closer look
Epic global cycling usually requires elite athleticism and intimate mechanical knowledge. Anne Mustoe possessed absolutely neither. A 54-year-old retired headmistress who hadn't ridden a bike since childhood, she set out to circumnavigate the globe despite not knowing how to fix a simple flat tire. Instead of learning, she leaned into pure bourgeois outsourcing. She cycled the world twice, simply paying confused local men in remote villages to patch her tubes and grease her chains while she sat back and sipped tea.
