Building a monument out of dead sea creatures is an incredible architectural flex. Along the medieval Swahili coast, builders didn't bother hauling terrestrial stone. Instead, they dove into the ocean, hacked out massive chunks of living coral reef, and let it cure in the sun to build the Great Mosque of Kilwa, creating a stunningly white, self-cooling religious center.
