A closer look
Moving a miniature token across a piece of paper shouldn't feel exhausting, but hex grid math changes everything. In the Dungeons & Dragons module Tomb of Annihilation, the map of Chult is obscured by blank hexagons representing 10 miles of unexplored jungle. Every single hex entered requires resource checks for insect repellent, clean water, and navigation rolls. The terrifying vastness of the empty grid transforms basic travel into a grueling survival horror experience, where moving the wrong direction is far deadlier than actual monsters.
