The trick that let musicians record over themselves
Guitarist Les Paul was absolutely tired of having to record a song perfectly in a single live take. He essentially hacked a tape machine by adding an extra playback head, allowing him to listen to a previously recorded track while simultaneously recording a brand new one over it. He completely ruined the concept of the 'live band', giving birth to the endless nightmare of studio overdubbing.
