The first major internet apocalypse wasn't a malicious cyberattack; it was a grad student’s research project with zero chill. Robert Tappan Morris just wanted to map the size of the nascent internet. Instead, his self-replicating worm had a fatal flaw in its logic: it kept reinfecting machines that were already infected, multiplying endlessly until systems simply choked to death. It effectively took down 10% of the internet because Morris forgot to add a basic 'are you already doing this?' sanity check, accidentally inventing the modern Denial-of-Service crisis.
