Venezuelan citizens famously resorted to farming and selling World of Warcraft gold in 2017 because the digital fantasy currency was actually worth significantly more than their own country's hyper-inflated sovereign currency. Players were literally slaying digital boars in a fantasy landscape just to afford a real-world loaf of bread, completely blurring the lines between dystopian cyberpunk nightmare and late-stage capitalist reality. It is deeply depressing that a completely fabricated economy managed by a bunch of overworked game developers in California was more stable than an actual oil-rich nation's monetary system. When slaying elves for internet coins becomes a legitimate survival strategy, you really have to wonder if the simulation we are living in is just broken
