A closer look
Signing a receipt when you use a credit card provides absolutely zero security benefits and is mathematically proven to do nothing to stop actual credit card fraud. Major credit card networks quietly eliminated the signature requirement years ago because retail cashiers are completely unqualified to act as forensic handwriting experts. Despite this, millions of small businesses and restaurants still aggressively demand that you scribble a chaotic, illegible line on a piece of thermal paper just to make everyone feel a false sense of psychological safety. We are actively wasting millions of hours of collective human life pretending that drawing a squiggly line on a digital iPad screen is somehow an impenetrable fortress of identity verification. It is just another one of those beautiful little collective delusions we all agree to participate in because society is deeply afraid of admitting that our financial data is largely unprotected anyway
