A closer look
You would think the inventor of the printing press would embrace full automation, but old habits die hard. While Johannes Gutenberg masterfully printed the text of his famous 1450s bibles using movable type, he left huge blank spaces on the pages. He then hired actual human artists to painstakingly hand-paint colorful borders and intricate illustrations into every single copy. He basically invented mass production only to completely ruin its efficiency with artisanal arts and crafts.
