Heated water can actually freeze faster than cold water under certain highly specific and intensely debated thermal conditions known as the Mpemba effect. Discovered by a Tanzanian student making ice cream, the underlying physics remains surprisingly controversial, with theories pointing to rapid evaporation reducing mass, convection currents accelerating heat transfer, or the breaking of hydrogen bonds freeing up energy. Despite decades of modern scientific research, physicists still cannot agree on a single unified explanation for why boiling liquid manages to beat room-temperature tap water to the icy finish line. It is incredibly hilarious that humanity can split the atom and chart the collision of distant galaxies, but we are still fundamentally baffled by what happens to a hot cup of tea when you throw it into a generic kitchen freezer
