A closer look

GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 was originally programmed with a feature that required players to unplug and re-plug their rumble pak to reload their virtual weapons. The developers genuinely thought this physical action would heighten the immersive experience of being a secret agent, completely ignoring the fact that aggressively yanking hardware out of a plastic controller every five seconds would ruin both the pacing of a firefight and the console itself. Nintendo executives finally stepped in to stop this madness before release, politely pointing out that forcing gamers to dismantle their accessories mid-game was a terrible idea. We were thankfully spared a reality where a generation of kids destroyed their thumbsticks and memory cards just to put a fresh magazine into a pixelated pistol, proving that sometimes corporate interference actually saves artists from their own disastrously stupid ideas
