A creation story recast as a scientific experiment
In Raëlian belief, the Elohim are not gods in the supernatural sense but an advanced extraterrestrial civilization. The movement teaches that they created life on Earth through laboratory science, including the genetic engineering of humans. What other religions might describe as divine creation, Raëlians interpret as the work of technologically advanced beings.
That interpretation gives the story a particular twist: humanity is not the accidental by-product of a cosmic miracle, but the result of deliberate design by another species. It also makes the Elohim, in this belief system, potential visitors rather than distant objects of worship.
Why an embassy matters to the movement
The campaign for an extraterrestrial embassy follows from that premise. If the Elohim are real and may someday return, Raëlians argue, Earth should have a place prepared to receive them. An embassy would represent a welcome and a proposed channel for contact—not merely a monument to an origin story.
The idea also turns a religious belief into a public project. Instead of treating contact as something that happens only in scripture or private revelation, the movement presents it as a future diplomatic encounter that humanity could plan for. The embassy campaign is therefore part of the belief itself: a visible expression of the hope that creators and created might meet again.
