The American instinct to just throw cash at a map until it belongs to them is practically genetic. In 1867, 1946, and again in 2019, the United States government floated the idea of buying Greenland from Denmark. Despite being repeatedly told that an entire autonomous territory isn't a used Honda Civic for sale, US officials kept trying to manifest destiny all the way to the Arctic Circle.
