Thanks to a series of violent seismic shifts in 1811, the Mississippi River violently changed course, completely isolating a chunk of Kentucky. The 'Kentucky Bend' is a 30-square-mile piece of land entirely surrounded by Missouri and Tennessee. You literally have to leave the state to go anywhere else in the state.
