A closer look
Photosynthesis is apparently for amateurs. Down in the abyssal plains of the Pacific Ocean, where absolutely no sunlight penetrates, metallic lumps called polymetallic nodules are quietly generating 'dark oxygen.' These deep-sea rocks carry incredibly high electrical charges—acting like naturally occurring AA batteries. Through a spontaneous process of seawater electrolysis, the electrical voltage of these nodules splits H2O molecules, producing pure oxygen to keep the local benthic ecosystem breathing in the pitch black.
