Why ZIP files are named after zippers

Data compression relies on the exact same branding as your favorite winter jacket. Phil Katz created the ubiquitous ZIP format in 1989 to compress massive digital files into manageable packages, and he wanted a name that implied ridiculous speed. His friend suggested naming it after the literal clothing fastener because it zipped things up quickly and tightly.
