Nothing screams 'all-powerful dark wizard' quite like faking your suicide for some cheap PR. In 1930, the infamous occultist Aleister Crowley collaborated with poet Fernando Pessoa to leave a fake suicide note at a coastal rock formation in Portugal called Boca do Inferno. He just wanted to generate mystery and sell more of his esoteric paintings in Berlin. Three weeks later, he strolled back into the public eye, proving that the greatest magic trick is just basic guerrilla marketing.
