Silicon can only take us so far before we hit the physical limits of thermodynamics, which is why scientists are looking to actual biology. Biohybrid computing substrates combine living neurons with synthetic silicon hardware. In a landmark experiment known as "DishBrain," researchers successfully cultured hundreds of thousands of living brain cells atop high-density microelectrode arrays. By feeding the cells electrical impulses representing the paddle and ball, the organic mass dynamically rewired its own neural pathways to successfully play a game of Pong.
