When even the dead need more room
Santa Cruz del Islote is so densely settled that the community’s cemetery lies on another island. That separation is a practical consequence of living on a tiny patch of land: every plot used for burial is one less plot available for homes, paths, or shared spaces.
A cemetery also needs room that cannot easily be squeezed between houses. Moving it elsewhere lets the island’s limited ground serve the people who live there while still giving the community a place for burials.

The cemetery’s location makes a basic part of island life depend on travel across the water. For residents, the boundary between everyday life and burial ground is not simply a fence or a road; it is the stretch of sea between two islands.
That detail gives a vivid measure of the settlement’s crowding. On a larger island, a cemetery can occupy a quiet corner. Here, even that corner has to be found somewhere else.
