Why Roman carts had standardized wheelbases

The concept of 'staying in your lane' used to be a very literal, violently enforced mandate. The stone roads of the Roman Empire were heavily trafficked, which naturally carved deep grooves into the rock over time. To prevent their wooden carts from shattering into splinters, wheelbases had to be universally standardized across the empire so they could comfortably ride inside these historical tramlines.
