Reading is a remarkably clunky and modern invention for the human mind. Because we spent millions of years surviving by looking at things, our visual cortex can process an entire complex image 60,000 times faster than it takes to decode a sentence. Text forces the brain to painfully translate arbitrary squiggles into sounds, which is biologically exhausting.
