The first endoscope used a burning candle

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

The very first endoscope, invented by Philipp Bozzini in 1806, was basically just a thin metal tube containing a literal burning candle. Doctors would aggressively jam this wax-filled fire hazard into various bodily orifices, relying on a series of tiny mirrors to reflect the candlelight around internal organs. Unsurprisingly, internal burns were a rather frequent and highly unpleasant complication.
