Ophthalmoscopes let physicists peek inside eyes

Before the 1850s, looking inside a living human eyeball was basically impossible without blinding the patient or cutting them open. A physicist named Hermann von Helmholtz finally figured out that by using a tiny angled mirror and a light source, he could illuminate the retina perfectly. He basically invented a tiny flashlight just to satisfy his own morbid curiosity about human optics.
