Electroconvulsive therapy wasn't born in a sterile psychiatric lab; it was conceptualized in a butcher shop. Italian neurologist Ugo Cerletti noticed that pigs at the local slaughterhouse were jolted with electricity to render them docile and unconscious before being processed. He thought, 'Hey, why not try this on human brains?' and thus, a highly controversial psychiatric technology was born.
