Ultrasound was used on ships before babies

Before we used it to print out grainy, black-and-white photos of unborn babies that look like slightly lumpy potatoes, ultrasound was industrial tech. It was originally developed to detect microscopic flaws in the metal hulls of ships and submarines. It turns out that bouncing high-frequency sound waves through thick steel works shockingly well for seeing inside the human uterus, too.
