In the 17th century, physicians figured out the mechanics of pumping blood into a human, but totally missed the memo on 'blood types' or 'species compatibility'. Early transfusions literally utilized sheep blood, operating under the wild assumption that the gentle nature of the sheep would somehow calm agitated patients. Spoiler alert: injecting barnyard plasma into a human ends exactly as tragically as you'd expect.
